Corine Truter: Head Biokineticist

I have a strong passion for human movement and the role exercise plays in healing and recovery. This passion led me to pursue a career in biokinetics, where I focus on helping people restore function, reduce pain, and move with confidence.
My journey began in 2013 when I completed a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Technology while gaining hands-on experience by shadowing at a biokinetics practice. It was during this time that I discovered my love for rehabilitation. I went on to complete my degree in Sport and Exercise Technology in 2016, followed by my degree in Biokinetics in 2017.
After completing my internship at Lizanne Dreyer Biokinetics in Polokwane, I opened my own practice in 2020. I am deeply committed to my profession and continuously strive to improve my rehabilitation techniques to ensure evidence-based, personalised care for every patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is a Biokineticist different from a Physiotherapist?

In the early stages of an injury, a physiotherapist helps manage pain and restore initial movement. As you recover, a biokineticist then focuses on building strength, improving function, and guiding you back to confident, pain-free movement through exercise.

2. What is Biokinetics?

Biokinetics is the science of human movement and the therapeutic application of exercise to improve physical function, manage injury, prevent re-injury, and enhance overall health and performance. Biokineticists are registered allied health professionals who use scientifically-based exercise prescription as a primary treatment modality.

3. What does a Biokineticist do?

A biokineticist helps you move better by assessing how your body functions, finding what’s not working optimally, and using tailored exercise programmes to support recovery from injury or surgery, manage chronic conditions, and improve day-to-day movement.

4. Can I claim Biokinetics from medical aid?
Many biokineticists are registered with medical aid schemes in South Africa, and sessions can be claimed subject to your specific plan’s available benefits. It’s recommended to check with your provider about coverage.

 5. What should I expect on my first visit?

At your initial session, we take the time to understand your history and assess how you move, looking at your strength, flexibility, balance, and overall function. This allows us to create a rehabilitation plan that is specific to you.

6. Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No referral is needed to book an appointment with a biokineticist. That said, some medical aids may ask for a referral to cover the cost, and if you’re recovering from surgery or managing a chronic condition, having medical clearance is a good idea.

7. What should I wear/bring to my appointment?
Come dressed in comfortable, active clothing that makes it easy to move. It’s also helpful to bring any medical reports, scans, or medical aid details you may have.

8. How long are the sessions?
Initial appointments typically last 45–60 minutes. During follow-up sessions, we’ll spend the same amount of time supervising your exercises and helping you progress safely.

9. Who can benefit from seeing a Biokineticist?
Biokinetics can help everyone, from those recovering from orthopaedic injuries or surgery, to people managing chronic conditions, athletes wanting to boost performance, and anyone looking to improve movement, strength, and overall wellbeing.
